Home Candle Making

As in so many areas, when it comes to home candle making what was once old has become new again. In times past, candle making was a seasonal household chore. A family had to make their own candles if they wanted to have light once the sun went down.

Then, as chandlers (candle makers) became more common most households hired these crafts people to make their candles for them. In the late 19th century development of both paraffin wax and candle making machines made quality candles less expensive and more readily available than they'd ever been before.

Finally, oil lamps, gas lamps and eventually electric lamps replace candles as a utilitarian means of lighting.

However, candles have never lost their appeal. Almost everyone appreciates the soft glow of candlelight and most households use candles at least occasionally. In addition, candles are often part of rituals and ceremonies ranging from religious activities to weddings to birthday parties.

For many decades, almost no one made their own candles. Then, in the 1970s, there was a resurgence of interest in candle making as a craft and hobby. With some waxing and waning this interest has continued to grow to this day, to the point at home candle making is once more becoming common.

However nobody is making their own candles because they have to. They're several reasons why people take up this hobby.

Probably most common is simply for the pleasure of it. It's fun to make candles, especially when you apply some creativity to it.

Candle making is also a fun craft to do with older children, so it can become a memory building family activity.

Another great aspect of candle making, is that candles make great gifts. This means that a candle maker is never at a loss for present no matter what the occasion. Better yet, a home candle maker can craft the candle specifically appropriate for the recipient and the occasion.

Some people probably do it to save a little bit of money. You certainly can make a quality candle for much less than you pay for it at a fancy boutique. Some entrepreneurial types take this to the next level. They produce candles to sell and start their own home based business.

Another appealing point about home candle making is that it's relatively easy to get started. Unlike some other crafts, it doesn't require an investment in a lot of expensive equipment and materials to begin.
